Who Are Sodom and Her Daughters?
Hello Mike,
In the following scripture…:
Eze 16:55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.
… who is sodom and her daughters?
What documents are you writing now? Thanks,

Hi C____,
Thank you for your questions.
Your first question is “What does Sodom and her daughters mean?”
Spiritually speaking, “Sodom and her daughters” is a Biblical term for all of those who have turned their backs on God to the point that God has destroyed them from off the earth:
Gen 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
Gen 18:21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.
Gen 18:22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham stood yet before the LORD.
Gen 19:24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
Gen 19:25 And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.
Gen 19:29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.
So “Sodom and her daughters” is “Gomorrah… [ and] the cities of the plains”, whose “sin is very grievous”.
Spiritually speaking, “Sodom and her daughters” is “the first man Adam” within all of us by birth. We are all “shapen in iniquity and conceived in sin… marred in the Potter’s hand” by birth:
Psa 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.
Jer 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make it.
1Co 15:45 And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.
Paul makes clear that what happened to Sodom is what must happen to all flesh and blood, natural mankind. We are all natural and naturally minded before we are given to become spiritually minded. We must all die to “the first man Adam” in order to take on “the last Adam… a life giving spirit”.
1Co 15:46 Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.
1Co 15:47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven.
1Co 15:48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
1Co 15:49 And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
1Co 15:50 Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
Spiritually speaking “flesh and blood… corruption” is “Sodom and her daughters”.
But let’s look at the verse with that phrase “Sodom and her daughters” in it, and I think we will find a very clear indication of what that phrase means in that very verse:
Eze 16:55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.
This whole 16th chapter of Ezekiel is addressed to physical Jerusalem and her daughters. Here is how this chapter begins:
Eze 16:1 Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
Eze 16:2 Son of man, cause Jerusalem to know her abominations,
Eze 16:3 And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD unto Jerusalem; Thy birth and thy nativity is of the land of Canaan; thy father was an Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite.
In Isa 1, which we will read shortly, we will see Jerusalem being identified as the “great city” which murders God’s prophets, of Rev 11, and which is the great harlot of Rev 17-18, which is also full of the blood of the saints:
Isa 1:1 The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.
Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
“Spiritually… the great city… where also our Lord was crucified… is called Sodom and Egypt”. John had obviously read Isaiah, and the holy spirit inspired him to call a spade a spade spiritually.
God’s witnesses are killed “in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom…”
So we read in Rev 18:
Rev 18:24 And in her [“the great city… become a harlot] was found the blood of prophets, and of saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth.
There it is. Isaiah one is “concerning Judah and Jerusalem”, just another way of saying “Jerusalem and her daughters”, and Jerusalem and her daughters are “a harlot” where “murderers… now… dwell [ and] in her was found the blood of prophets and saints, and of all that were slain upon the earth”.
So when we read that Jerusalem and her daughters will be brought back to God at the same time as “Sodom and her daughters”, we can now understand that physical Israel and Sodom and her daughters are spiritually one and the same:
Rev 11:8 And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
Who is Jerusalem in Old Testament prophecy? Here again is what we are told in Biblical terms:
Isa 1:21 How is the faithful city become an harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers.
But now notice who else this same harlot city is called by the holy spirit:
Isa 1:9 Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.
Isa 1:10 Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom; give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.
So there it is. Jerusalem and Sodom are one and the same as far as the holy spirit is concerned because they have both rejected their God, and they will both have to wait until after the millennium and the great white throne judgment before the valley of dry bones of Ezekiel 37, “the whole house of Israel” will be brought back to their true God, who made them “when Sodom and her daughters” are brought back to God.
Eze 16:55 When thy sisters, Sodom and her daughters, shall return to their former estate, and Samaria and her daughters shall return to their former estate, then thou and thy daughters shall return to your former estate.
Isaiah continues his indictment of Jerusalem:
Isa 3:8 For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.
Isa 3:9 The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.
Let’s compare these verses with what God told Abraham about “Sodom and her sisters”:
Gen 18:20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grievous;
Is there any difference between the reason for the destruction of Sodom and the destruction of “the great city which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified”? I think not!
I hope this helps you to understand that ‘Sodom and her daughters’ is just Bible- speak for those who have rejected Christ and His Father in every age.
You also asked “What documents are you writing now?” We will be wrapping up the book of Job shortly, and then we will begin studying the book of Ecclesiastes.
I hope I have answered your questions to your satisfaction. I would like to invite you to join us on our daily and weekly studies, which are listed on iswasandwillbe. com.
